Summary: | The BioGenesis super(SM) soil-washing technique uses a cleaner to transfer organic compounds from the soil matrix to a liquid phase, where the contaminants are either dissolved or are sorbed onto suspended particulates. The technology is described, and results are presented from its evaluation under EPA's Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation program. Runs were conducted on three different batches of 18 yd super(3) of crude-oil-contaminated soil. Total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbon was used as the parameter of concern. Results indicated that the levels of hydrocarbons in the treated soils decreased 65 73%. Following subsequent biodegradation, 85 88% of the petroleum hydrocarbons were removed. The costs of the treatment system were calculated at $0.74/yd super(3), based on the treatment of 2000 yd super(3) of soil. |
