Description
Summary:This is the first revision of the North American species of Oreodytes, a genus variously considered as distinct or as a subgenus of Hydroporus or Deronectes. The genus is most closely related to Deronectes, but several characters support separation of the two taxa. Deuteronectes Guignot is rejected as a separate genus. Nearly all 16 species are confined to northwestern North America, but O. scitulus (LeConte) extends to the Atlantic Coast. The species prefer swiftly flowing mountain streams. A cladistic analysis is presented with three clades. The Scitulus group contains six species, the Angustior group has nine species, and O. quadrimaculatus (Horn) is in its own clade. Four new species are described, O. leechi, O. humboldtensis, O. rhyacophilus, and O. sierrae. O. obesus (Fall) is a subspecies of O. rivalis (Gyllenhal) and O. bisulcatus (Fall) is a subspecies of O. scitulus.
