Summary: | The need for limits to protect agricultural soils from mechanical overloading caused by field traffic of heavy vehicles and machinery is discussed. Objectives of such limits include: (1) improved efficiency and resource economy of crop production systems in the short term; (2) ensured soil productivity in the long term; (3) reduced negative impact of crop production on the environment. Achievement of objective 1 may be entirely left to the farmers, while that of objectives 2 and 3 should be the responsibility of society as a whole. |
