Description
Summary:Mudskipper (Boleophthalmus dentatus) were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of potassium dichromate for 1, 2 or 3 d. They were observed every 2 h to detect behavioural changes and at the end of the exposure, brain and muscle tissue were analysed for activities of 5 ion dependent ATPases. Initially fish showed aggressive behaviour and rapid swimming but became inactive and stiff after longer exposures, with paralytic symptoms at higher concentrations. In muscle there was a progressive inhibition of all enzymes but some initial stimulation occurred with the lower doses. A significant dose and time dependent inhibition of sodium and potassium ATPase was seen in brain and muscle, which could cause membrane disruption. The calcium, magnesium, calcium and bicarbonate and magnesium and bicarbonate ATPases in brain were also inhibited at higher doses and longer durations.
