Summary: | The firm TECHCOM GmBH (Germany) together with MISiS (Russia) has developed and patented an immersion, closed-bottom nozzle FOSULIS for casting special steels. The FOSULIS nozzle is fitted with a “skirt” fastened to the bottom of the outside of the nozzle above the lateral outlet channels arranged in a fan pattern over the perimeter of the nozzle cross section. In this case, steel is fed into the volume of liquid metal within a mold by distributed streams, and axial flow is inhibited. The nozzle has been tested under production conditions for casting ball-bearing, rail, and structural steels. Use of the nozzle makes it possible to reduce steel contamination by a factor of two to three, and to improve macrostructure quality indices by a factor of two. Additional testing of the FOSULIS nozzle is planned in casting high-quality, high-carbon steel for cord with increased specifications for non-metallic inclusions and carbon segregation. |
