Summary: | The Ozark cavefish occurred in 13 caves of 180 sites surveyed in the Springfield Plateau of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Extremely small population sizes, restrictive adaptations to the cave environment, over-collection and abuse of habitat threaten its existence. Careful protection of entire cave ecosystems and their aquifer recharge zones will be necessary to insure survival of this interesting species. |
