Summary: | An international effort to develop a Global Climate Observing System is expected to overcome the flaws inherent in current climate monitoring and data management practices. Recommendations for designing the new system and pursuing future research on anthropogenic climate change are summarized. Guidelines are proposed for the effective measurement and analysis of climate forcings and feedbacks, climate responses and feedbacks, and climate impacts. Overlapping measurements of both the old and new monitoring systems for both satellite and in situ data are advocated as standard practice for critical climate variables. |
