Description
Summary:An introduction to the habitat features and behavioral characteristics of several stream fishes during winter in a temperate-boreal ecosystem is presented. This review places special emphasis on the salmonid fishes that have been the subject of the majority of winter research. Space plays a critical role in controlling populations of fish in streams during the winter months. As a result, diverse aspects of winter habitat are assessed for a variety of spatial scales, ranging from microhabitat to river basin. Fish choose their winter habitat so as to minimize their expenditures of energy. Fish seek to protect themselves against adverse physicochemical conditions, such as ice and low oxygen levels. Management decisions regarding the restoration of fish habitat must incorporate these types of seasonal issues.
