Summary: | Growth-and-yield models are applied to loblolly pine plantations, which are intensively managed in the southern states. These models can optimize the use of midrotation thinning, which can increase cash flows and improve the quality of residual trees. Data on thinned and unthinned stands were collected on 186 loblolly plots planted in 1980-82. A control plot was compared with treatment plots of lightly and heavily thinned trees. Data were collection on yield relationships and compared with the predictions from growth-and-yield models. Results show that total yields are comparable for thinned and unthinned plots. Thinning increases the introduction of competitive undercover while changing the diameters, vigor, and quality of the remaining trees. |
