Summary:The concentrations of coplanar PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs were determined in surface-sediment samples collected in the vicinity of four combined-sewer overflows (CSOs) discharging into the lower Passaic River, NJ. Chemical fingerprinting techniques, which are described, were used to assess the significance of these CSO loadings on the sediment contaminant levels. Results indicated the presence of all 17 PCDD/F congeners in all of the sediment samples collected at each CSO location, with the exception of 1,2,3,7,8-pentaCDD. In addition, ten of 11 PCB congeners were detected in all sediment samples from all locations. The distribution patterns of both PCDD/Fs and PCBs in the sediment collected supported the hypothesis that the CSOs are a significant mechanism for the transport of the compounds to the lower Passaic River within each CSO district.
