Summary: | Cambridge University Library, MS Dd 3.20(4) is a letter-book containing transcripts of about 300 letters from Queen Elizabeth I, chiefly to European monarchs, heads of state and dignitaries. Two missives stand out as an exception from this Latin collection, two letters in Italian addressed to Gian Luigi Chiappino Vitelli, Marquess of Cetona. Textual evidence suggests that these letters may derive from a lost holograph. In addition to this, an analysis of their historical context has revealed some interesting facts about the short-lived but peculiar relationship between Elizabeth, Vitelli and the painter Federico Zuccaro, whose visit to England in the mid-1570s has frequently been a matter of debate for art scholars and historians. |
