Summary: | Genetic considerations, once considered important in the management of forests for production, are given less attention under ecosystem management. Genetics play a large part in determining the health of a forest, and thus are one important variable that could be monitored and managed toward ideal forest ecosystems. Genetics affect composition through diversity and rareness, they affect forest structure through their distribution in individuals and populations, and they affect forest function via their exchange among individuals and populations. Examples of seed and seedling movements and their successes and failures in specific forests illustrate the potential impacts of genetics. Genetic guidelines are offered for the forestry management challenges of reforestation, timber stand improvements for harvesting and regeneration, and for conserving genetic diversity. |
