Description
Summary:The effect of model aquatic pollutants (cadmium, copper, zinc) on the growth of human established cell line KB, and primary African green monkey kidney (AGMK) cell cultures was determined. The ID50's (concentrations causing 50 per cent reduction in cell number after 72 h incubation) for cadmium, copper, and zinc were 5.5, 150.0, and 100.0 uM respectively in KB cells, and 3.0, 100.0, and 82.0 uM respectively in AGMK cells. The river water and groundwater used in these experiments was not toxic to either cell culture. These results indicated that the cell culture assay was more sensitive than the algal bioassay, and provided a simple, rapid, quantitative method of determining aquatic toxicity.
