Acute and Chronic Toxicity of Copper to the Estuarine Copepod Eurytemora affinis: Influence of Organic Comlexation and Speciation

Summary: | Acute and chronic copper toxicity tests were conducted using the estuarine zooplankter, Eurytemora affinis, and the data were used to develop an acute-to-chronic ratio for this species. During the toxicity experiments, dissolved Cu, Cu speciation, and organic complexation were measured. The test procedures are detailed. Results showed that the inorganic Cu concentration was a very small fraction of the total Cu, ranging approximately 0.15 1.2 mu g/l. The corresponding cupric ion concentrations were approximately a factor of 13 lower. The resulting 48-h LC sub(50), 96-h LC sub(50), and 8-d chronic values were 83.0, 69.4, and 64.0 mu g/l, respectively, and the acute-to-chronic ratio was calculated at 1.3. Volumetric analysis of selected samples indicated greater than 99% complexation of Cu in all samples, with complexing capacities increasing with both time and total Cu concentration. |
