Summary: | Colonial methods of forest management have remained dominant in post-independence India. Emphasis has been placed on the economic exploitation of the forest to the detriment of the land. Governmental afforestation programs have suffered from a one-dimensional approach that diverts fertile agricultural land to wood production and further degrades land that needs afforestation. An end-use classification of forest land is urgently needed and a policy should be adapted to account for the role of the forests in soil and water conservation. |
