Description
Summary:The fate of PAHs in the Saguenay Fjord of Quebec, Canada was simulated using a mass balance model. Five compartments, consisting of a surficial sediment layer and its overlying water column, which is exposed to the atmosphere, were connected to downstream and upstream currents. The quantity and behavior is deduced from PAH loading from industrial effluent, atmospheric deposition, advective flow and other inputs. Behavior includes transformation rates and transport. Results for benzo[a]pyrene, phenanthrene, and naphthalene are shown. For benzo[a]pyrene the results from the model simulation agreed with field measurements.
