Summary:Silicon photomultpiliers are robust, low voltage sensors capable of measuring low light levels. They are well suited for use in a cosmic ray detector using scintillator embedded with wavelength shifting fibre, designed for lab based and high altitude cosmic ray experiments. The development of such a detector, using an ARM Cortex M3 microcontroller based data acquisition system is discussed.
