description The unique design and operating requirements of lignite-fueled tangental fired units that require attention during the design of retrofits needed to cut emissions of nitrogen oxides are identified. A case study is presented of the issues considered during the recent conversion of Cooperative Power/United Power Association's 550 MW lignite-fired Coal Creek Unit No. 2 to low NO sub(x) firing. This conversion was achieved using Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation's Tangental Low NO sub(x) system. Substantial improvements were observed in terms of emissions performance and furnace operating conditions following implementation of the low NO sub(x) system. Lessons learned during implementation of the system are expected to have far-reaching implications.
