Summary: | An experiment was conducted to examine the use of dimethyl sulfoxide as a phase-change material for cool storage. Air heating or cooling was accomplished by circulating hot or cold water through a coil-tube heat exchanger. The cooled air was allowed to flow through the phase-change material section of the apparatus, and the freezing cycle was terminated when no further solidification of the dimethyl sulfoxide occurred. The experimental measurements were analyzed using the effective heat capacity method. Results indicated that dimethyl sulfoxide can be used for cool storage. For approximately 5 h of freezing time, the heat charge period ranged only 2 3 h. |
