The Phenology of Pythium (Peronosporomycetidae) in Soil

(1) Seasonal changes in availability of Phythium propagules occur in Pythium communities of both cultivated and uncultivated soils. (2) There is a winter peak and summer trough of Phythium propagule availability although there is some evidence for a secondary peak in late winter. (3) The fluctuation...

description (1) Seasonal changes in availability of Phythium propagules occur in Pythium communities of both cultivated and uncultivated soils. (2) There is a winter peak and summer trough of Phythium propagule availability although there is some evidence for a secondary peak in late winter. (3) The fluctuations have been modelled using a sine curve, and this model can explain a considerable percentage of the variance recorded. (4) The predominant species have been shown to have similar phenology. (5) Sites differ in phase of the fluctuation, with wetter sites tending to show an earlier increase in availability. (6) The amplitude of the fluctuation is related to the mean population density but these variables are independent of the phasing of the changes.
