Description
Summary:This review of the status of aquatic biodiversity in China's inland waters addresses the threats to biodiversity and their potential impacts on ecosystems and human welfare. The loss of diversity at the species level is fostered through habitat loss, fragmentation, nonnative species innovations, overfishing, loss of aquatic ecosystems to overstocking of nonnative carps, inbreeding in domestic carps, and eutrophication. The result is a significant decline in fish diversity and an inadequate knowledge of aquatic fauna. Both indicate the need for a strong conservation program in China.
