Summary: | The processes that lead to the formation of sewage sludge during the course of mechanical, biological, and chemical sewage treatment are reviewed. The complicated composition of sewage sludge is analyzed. Sewage sludge is typically rich in both micro- and macroelements. Sewage sludge may also contain a variety of toxic substances and pathogenic organisms. Scientists have developed several practical techniques for the neutralization of sewage sludge. An overview is presented of the benefits and disadvantages of several prominent technologies that have been developed for the treatment of sewage sludge, with special emphasis on non-industrial techniques for the neutralization of sewage sludge (e.g., composting). |
