Summary: | Recently, the relation of spectral sensitivities to color of oil droplets in cones of freshwater turtles was reexamined by the intracellular injection of Lucifer yellow. Using this new morphological identification, the authors investigated the synaptic contacts between photoreceptors and horizontal cells in the turtle retina and found that both biphasic chromaticity horizontal cells (BHCs) and triphasic horizontal cells (THCs) made ribbon synaptic contacts with red-sensitive cones. This result suggests that BHCs and THCs receive direct inputs for red-sensitive cones. Thus, the responses of BHCs and THCs to red flashes would be generated not only by the cascading circuit of cone-horizontal cell connections, but also directly by red-sensitive cones. This paper describes the novel circuit between cones and horizontal cells in the turtle retina. |
