Survey of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in fish from the Great Lakes and selected Michigan rivers

Skinless fillets of fish were analysed for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) residues using combinations and modifications of published methods. Detection limits, using high resolution gas chromatography with electron capture (HRGC-EC) followed by HRGC-MS, were about 10 ppt TCDD. The fish w...

Description
Summary:Skinless fillets of fish were analysed for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) residues using combinations and modifications of published methods. Detection limits, using high resolution gas chromatography with electron capture (HRGC-EC) followed by HRGC-MS, were about 10 ppt TCDD. The fish were collected during surveys of Saginaw bay (Huron lake) in 1979, 1981, 1983 surveys of eastern Erie lake (1981, 1983), and the Great Lakes National Program surveys (1983). Analytical results showed highest levels of TCDD contamination in Saginaw bay, Ontario lake, and the Tittabawassee river. Concentrations ranged from 16 ppt in a Saginaw bay carp to 102 ppt in a Saginaw bay catfish. No TCDD residues were detected in Michigan rivers other than the Tittabawassee.
