Summary:Findings are reported from two year's worth of study investigating the coastal seawater and sandy sediments found along the beach in Sopot, Poland. Measurements enacted as part of this effort were conducted from May 1997 to April 1999. Analyses were conducted at four testing sites located perpendicular to the shore. These sites were selected in the region situated between the mouths of two streams, namely Grodowy Potok and Kamienny Potok. Researchers found that the total number of mesophilic bacteria increased with increasing distance from the waterline. However, the number of Escherichia coli was highest in the coastal waters and in sands closest to the water. These results suggest that two sources of microbiological pollution impact the sandy beaches in the region.
