Summary: | Recent surveys of the saiga antelope populations show three populations of one subspecies in Kazakhstan, one population of the same subspecies in Russia, and two populations of a different subspecies in Mongolia. Three populations have been declining rapidly in the past three years, under threat from poaching. The antelope are hunted for meat and horns, an important source of income during periods of economic collapse. Selective hunting of adult males in one population has reduced reproductive rates. The Mongolian population is not in decline, but is small in size. |
