Summary: | The PIRLA project (scheduled for June 1983 to December 1986) involved stratigraphic analysis of several characteristics of sediment cores from approximately 35 lakes in 4 low-alkalinity regions in North America receiving acid deposition. The areas studied were the Adirondack Mountains (N.Y.), northern New England, northern Great Lakes states, and northern Florida, with a view to reconstructing the recent acidification histories of a representative suite of lakes from each of the 4 regions. Dating of events would be by lead-210 and chronostratigraphic markers; pH changes would be inferred from diatom and chrysophyte assemblages; deposition of byproducts would be reconstructed from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, soot particles, sulphur, and selected metals; catchment lake changes related to acidification would be analysed through studies of metals, metal speciation, sulphur, and sulphur isotopes; and catchment disturbances would be determined from historical records, pollen, and charcoal. |
