Description
Summary:Cost-limiting factors constrain the application of acid-hydrolysis and fermentation to fuel ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass. An effort to improve the technology entailed analysis of sugar recovery rates from a mixture of wood chips through three sets of acid-hydrolysis trials. The chips were sorted to include equal ratios of softwood and hardwood. The highest dextrose yields were attained within 2 h of heating time by use of 26% by weight sulfuric acid, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 78-82%.
