Summary: | Many Cabalists lived in Germany in the Middle Ages. Their apparent disappearance after the late seventeenth century has generally been attributed to the hostile philosophical climate of the Age of Enlightenment. Evidence of a few surviving Cabalist families is presented here; they tried to sustain the mystic tradition while living almost hidden. It is shown that devotees of the Cabala were also attracted by the Zionist idea; thus the revival of the Jewish state in the Holy Land is linked with this ancient & genuine part of the Jewish spirit.
