Summary: | Sediment and water sampled during 1998 in Montevideo Harbor, Uruguay, which receives untreated sewage and industrial effluents, were assayed for COD, DO, ammonia, suspended solids, and other water quality indicators. Biodiversity was poor, as chronic contamination adversely impacted macrofaunal diversity. BOD levels were high throughout the harbor and generally exceeded maximum values established by law. Fecal coliform concentrations also exceeded environmental standards and may pose a significant risk to human health. |
