Description
Summary:Although many advances have been made in the ability to predict the development of the El Ni o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon and in understanding of the teleconnections between ENSO and climate elsewhere on the planet, little effort has been made to exploit climate predictions to improve water resources management in tropical regions. Findings are reported from a project investigating the influences of ENSO on streamflow and rainfall in the upper catchment of the Mahaweli river in Sri Lanka. This analysis was implemented using a range of techniques, including correlation analysis, composite analysis, and contingency tables. Evidence showed that El Ni o conditions were linked to reduced annual flows, while La Ni a conditions were related to elevated flows.
