The influence of number of passengers and music genre on driving speed of young adult angkot drivers

► Public transportation has been an increasingly problematic issue in Indonesia. ► Aim to study the effect of number of passengers and music genre on driving behavior. ► Driving behavior of young angkot drivers was affected by the number of passengers. ► No significant effect of music genre and no interaction effect. ► Secure source of income needed to promote safe driving for the angkot drivers. This study was conducted to examine the effects of the number of passengers, variety of music genre, and the interaction between the number of passengers and music genre on the driving speed of young adult angkot (minivan public transport) drivers. A 2 (number of passengers)×2 (music genre) factorial design was conducted on 60 angkot drivers in Depok, a city on the outskirts of Jakarta. Results showed that driving behavior of young adult angkot drivers was significantly influenced by the number of passengers in their vehicles. Music genre and the interaction between the number of passengers and music genre had no significant effect on driving behavior. There is a possibility that for angkot drivers, who need to pay the daily rental of the angkot minivans to their bosses and to get additional money to take home for their daily needs, the number of passengers is associated with income. This study implies that safer driving behavior among young adult angkot drivers can be encouraged after efforts to ensure a more secure source of income for them are made.
