Effect of heat treatment on the structure and mechanical properties of 0.08%C–17.0%Cr–0.8%Ti steel after “internal” nitriding

•Internal nitriding of ferritic stainless steel leads to significant hardening of the steel.•In the structure of the steel the precipitation of Cr2N particles was observed.•Annealing at 700°C after nitriding leads to the most uniform distribution of the microhardness. Description
Summary:•Internal nitriding of ferritic stainless steel leads to significant hardening of the steel.•In the structure of the steel the precipitation of Cr2N particles was observed.•Annealing at 700°C after nitriding leads to the most uniform distribution of the microhardness. The influence of heat treatment on the structure, microhardness and tensile properties of the 0.08%C–17.0%Cr–0.8%Ti steel after “internal” nitriding is analyzed. It is shown that the nitriding and subsequent annealing of sheet samples leads to formation of structure with precipitates of nitride particles and a significant hardening of the material.
