Description
Summary:Spatial and temporal changes in cod abundance along the west coast of Sweden (Kattegat and Skagerrak) were studied over the last 20-40 yr. Offshore abundance has declined since the early 1980s in both areas, resulting in very low densities in the late 1990s. Informal statistics from fishermen suggest that inshore catches of cod preceded the offshore decline by about 5-10 yr, and that the extent of stock depletion is much worse than has been determined from routine annual assessments.
