Summary: | Differential flightiness of 5 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) age-sex classes and the flight response of fawns relative to their mothers was analyzed. Approach of an observer resulted in the general order of flight: adult male → fawn → maternal doe = other doe = yearling male. Flightiness of adult males is discussed as influenced by their more solitary behavior and/or their experiences accumulated with age. Does fled before their fawns in July, but fawns fled before their mothers from October through December. This may reflect a 2-stage learning process during which fawns 1st learn potential sources of danger from their mothers and then themselves learn to react appropriately. |
