Description
Summary:The toxic oil syndrome, a new disease which has appeared in Spain and which has affected 20,178 individuals, has shown an initial acute phase with fever, skin rash, myalgia, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, liver injury with portal and lobular lesions, and eosinophilia, followed by an itermediate phase with thomboembolism, pulmonary hypertension, skin edema, loss of weight, and the sicca syndrome, and a late phase with a scleroderma-like picture and peripheral neuropathy. Histological investigations have shown a generalized vascular lesion with endothelial damage, nonnecrotizing vasculitis, fibrosing sequelae, and involvement of many organ systems. In this paper, the authors address the toxic oil syndrome and its effects on the esophagus.
