Description
Summary:The author looks at the evolving relationship in Britain between individual makers and industry since the 1960s. He briefly discusses collaborations between ceramists Michael Cardew and Copeland Pottery, Lucie Rie and Wedgwood, Janice Tchalenko and Poole Pottery, Susan Pryke and IKEA. He also describes the collaboration between his own ceramics-based studio Queensberry Hunt Levien and manufacturers including Ideal Standard and Thomas (a division of Rosenthal). He concludes that there is still much progress to be made in developing links between craftspeople and manufacturers, and believes that the solution may lie in education. He believes that a new kind of postgraduate course is needed that is specifically aimed at students who have done craft-based degrees. It would have a professional bias and be designed to liberate the inherent skills and values of craft-based designers in a new commercial context.
