Description
Summary:The development of emission control legislation for motor vehicles is reviewed and the various control strategies defined in the light of recent European proposals. Implementation of two mainstream strategies is exemplified by test data for a three way catalyst equipped and a new type, lean burn vehicle. Principal conclusions are (i) that the three way system under test is capable of surpassing the new standards even after 50,000 miles at high speed and (ii) that the advanced lean burn system can meet these standards at zero miles but only when equipped with an oxidation catalyst.
