Summary: | The impact of different types of land use on runoff generation and associated soil and nutrient losses was studied in the Bhetegad watershed in the Central Himalayan hills of northern India. Plots in a pine forest, a tea plantation, rainfed agriculture, and degraded land were monitored from 1998-2001 for runoff, soil loss, and nutrient loss using standard methodologies. Organic matter loss was highest in the pine forest, then in the tea plantation. Annual nutrient losses (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) were highest in the agricultural cropland. These results will be useful in developing better management and conservation options for mountain areas under different land uses. |
