Accordingly, ranges of application and margins of safety can be larger or smaller, depending on the degree of protection deemed adequate. In assuring adequacy, conservatism is often invoked as a guiding principle, and it is an acceptable, even necessary, part of the scientific as well as the political process to establish a level or standard that is more protective than the minimum requirement. |
