Summary:The objective of an environmental health standard is, obviously, the provision of a desired level of protection for human health. Accordingly, ranges of application and margins of safety can be larger or smaller, depending on the degree of protection deemed adequate. In assuring adequacy, conservatism is often invoked as a guiding principle, and it is an acceptable, even necessary, part of the scientific as well as the political process to establish a level or standard that is more protective than the minimum requirement.
