Methylmerucry Increases S100B Content in Rat Cerebrospinal Fluid

Astrocytes, which are cellular targets of methylmercury, produce the calcium binding protein S100B. When cell death occurs, S100B is released to cerebrospinal fluid, where it is measurable as in indicator of brain damage. Rats were injected with 5 mg methylmercury/kg body weight, and monitored for o...

Description
Summary:Astrocytes, which are cellular targets of methylmercury, produce the calcium binding protein S100B. When cell death occurs, S100B is released to cerebrospinal fluid, where it is measurable as in indicator of brain damage. Rats were injected with 5 mg methylmercury/kg body weight, and monitored for open field and rearing behavior. S100B levels in cerebrospinal fluid were measured. Results showed that mercury levels in serum as well S100B levels in cerebrospinal fluid were increased after injection. Exposure to methylmercury reduced activity in open field studies and rearing behavior.
