Summary: | Reviews an exhibition of the work of 23 contemporary artists from the USA, UK and Germany, at Velvet da Vinci, San Francisco, from 27 February-30 March 2008. The show results from a collaboration between the University of the West of England, which has an enamel research centre, and the Museum der Arbeit in Hamburg; the artists were invited to create badges inspired by work in the Museum's collection by Germany's main badge manufacturer, Carl Wild. The reviewer comments on the difficulty of conveying meaning in a new badge using the artist's personal content, in comparison with the meaning that established symbols hold. Illustrated with works by Stephen Bottomley, Claudia Westhaus, and Linda Darty. |
