Description
Summary:John Smyth was a Scottish naturalist, born in 1924, and raised on the edge of Edinburgh. He was educated in science at Edinburgh University, and pursued a specialization in zoology. A lifelong volunteer in urban education groups, he was a founder of the Scottish Boy's Club, which is still an active organization after 50 years. This Club provided a foundation for his lifelong work in environmental education. A founder of this movement nationally and internationally, Smyth participated in numerous conventions, organizations, and institutions committed to environmental education. He participated in the first UNESCO Intergovernmental conference on environmental education (1978), and participated in the earliest development of the objectives and pedagogy of this movement. In addition to this field of influence, he was instrumental in supporting and strengthening numerous Scottish NGOs.
