Drought Induced Pulses of SO sub(4) super(2-) from a Canadian Shield Wetland: Use of delta super(34)S and delta super(18)O in SO sub(4) super(2-) to Determine Sources of Sulfur

Monitoring efforts have shown that pulses of elevated SO4 super(2-) concentrations often occur in streams draining forested catchments with significant wetland areas after prolonged periods of summer drought. Experts suspect that these periodic pulses of elevated SO4 super(2-) may play a strong role...

description Monitoring efforts have shown that pulses of elevated SO4 super(2-) concentrations often occur in streams draining forested catchments with significant wetland areas after prolonged periods of summer drought. Experts suspect that these periodic pulses of elevated SO4 super(2-) may play a strong role in observed delays in the recovery of freshwater streams and lakes in eastern Canada from historically high levels of acidic precipitation. Analyses of small forested catchments in the Turkey Lakes Watershed indicated that SO4 super(2-) concentrations in streams draining wetlands can be elevated by up to a factor of seven after drought as compared to the annual average. Findings are presented from a study seeking to identify the sources of the S involved in these phenomena.
