Description
Summary:Multi-isotopic determination of plutonium in marine sediments using sector-field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry is studied. The aim is to present an optimized methodology employed for the extraction of plutonium from marine sediments and its purification to a very high grade, prior to the analysis of different isotopes of plutonium by SF-ICP-MS. The results conclude that the sample preparation protocol leads to a final solution with a reproducible preconcentration yield of 42% of plutonium. The capability of the analytical procedure by SF-ICP-MS for the determination of super(240)Pu/ super(239)Pu isotope ratio is validated on certified reference materials by comparison with values obtained by TIMS and alpha spectrometry with spectral deconvolution. Besides this the chemical protocol can also be adapted to other marine environmental matrices, such as sea water and biological samples.
