Summary: | Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for carbon dioxide (CO sub(2)) and sulphur dioxide (SO sub(2)) emissions in India during 1950-2000 was estimated. The objective was to search for the empirical evidence for the EKC hypothesis of inverted-U relationship between economic growth, and CO sub(2) and SO sub(2) emission in India. Similarity of EKC with other curves, namely Engel and Laffer curves, was discussed. The linear and quadratic functional forms of EKC were estimated for both emissions. It was found that the quadratic functional form provided the best fit to the observed data for both types of emissions in the Indian scenario. The EKCs for India started falling, which reflected positively on the synergy between the developmental and environmental efforts. |
