Description
Summary:The contaminant levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments of the Mar Piccolo in Taranto are analyzed. PAH levels in the Mar Piccolo are higher than the one reported for the Adriatic Sea, and for the Cretan Sea. Extreme concentrations of PCBs are found at one station located close to the Navy Harbor in the first inlet. The ecotoxicological evaluation, based on international Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) and mSQGq indices, show medium-high ecological risks for marine organisms, especially for benthic species. Because of the risk posed to man via farmed mussels and sea food caught in the area, further studies of PCB levels in biota and a continuous monitoring of PAHs and PCBs in sediments and water are recommended.
