Summary:The use of a methodology for water allocation in the framework of environmental flows for preventing downstream environmental degradation, is discussed. River flows are highly variable that makes forecasting and management a challenge in the Krishna basin. The seasonality and inter-annual variability of water flows are crucial for the functioning of water-dependent ecosystems in arid and semiarid regions affected by the monsoon. Estimates of environmental flows determine the extent of a river basin and how new water resources can be developed. Understanding the environmental dynamics at the interconnectedness between the environment and rural development is very important to match environmental concerns with the social and economic objectives of sustainable development.
