Summary: | Repeated drying-rewetting cycles and their effects on the emission of carbon dioxide (CO sub(2)), nitrogen (N sub(2)), NO, and methane (CH sub(4)) in a forest soils are investigated. An important result of experiment is that drying and subsequent rewetting do not result in the release of any extra amount of climate-relevant gases. The destabilization of soil organic matter (SOM) due to drying and rewetting and therefore the providing of additional substrates to microorganisms have to be rejected for this forest soil. For the severe-drought scenario simulated by this experiment, rewetting intensity has no effect on the development of gas fluxes. The length of the drought period seems to be of much more importance for the total emission of CO sub(2), N sub(2)O, and NO than the rewetting. |
