Summary: | The mating system of vicunas (Vicugna vicugna ) is resource-defense polygyny. The purpose of this study was twofold. First the authors wanted to determine if there was a difference in time spent grazing by lactating and nonlactating female vicunas, an indirect measurement of maternal investment. Second, they wanted to determine if the amount of time that resident males spent in territorial behavior varied with number of females in the female group. This may occur if direct defense of females was required during the breeding season. |
